When we purchased our farm and livestock, the paddock was already set up with shelters and fencing, making it ready for immediate use. The first animal on our farm was one small standard donkey, followed by 3 Nigerian dwarf goats and about 10 chickens. It did not take long for me to discover that I absolutely adored goats. Before we began to grow our livestock the only animals we had ever owned were dogs and a couple cats, so this was a big learning curve for the whole family. I found a reputable breeder to purchase more goats, and quickly began growing our farm. Currently we have goats, sheep, donkeys, chickens, cows and two mini horses, Cricket and Stanley.
All of our animals serve a purpose on our farm. Some provide us with products such as milk, eggs and wool. While some serve as guardian animals to keep the others safe from predators, such as bobcats and coyotes. We are learning new ways to use the resources our animals provide. I’m hoping to learn how to make yogurt and cheese with our goat milk. I have started to learn how to spin with a spinning wheel in hopes of making items with the wool and cashmere our goats and sheep provide.
There’s always new things to learn. Taking care of our livestock has been heartbreaking and rewarding. All of our animals are people friendly and have great personalities. We love them all and find great joy in caring for them.
